We already export to Indonesia. What should we check?
Review the products and manufacturing sites currently covered by your certification or registration. If you are adding products, changing ingredients, or using a new factory, check whether your existing scope needs to be updated before treating the new range as covered.
Can we apply before we start exporting?
You can start preparing before your products enter the Indonesian market. Tell us where your products are manufactured, what they contain, and whether you have an Indonesian importer or representative. Those details help establish the appropriate next steps.
Do we need to be a Muslim-owned business?
A company does not need to be Muslim-owned to pursue halal certification. The assessment concerns products, materials, processes, and the applicable requirements. Specific personnel and training requirements should be checked for your pathway.
What is BPJPH?
BPJPH is Indonesia’s Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency. It oversees the national halal assurance system and issues Indonesian halal certificates through the applicable process.BPJPH guidance ↗

Does every new product or SKU need a separate certificate?
Do not assume a new product is covered by an existing certificate. Whether products can be grouped, added to an existing scope, or need another application depends on their category, ingredients, manufacturing setup, and the relevant pathway. Start with your current certificate and the list of products you want to add.
What if we manufacture in more than one country?
List every manufacturing site and identify which products are made at each one. Different locations can affect the application scope, document requirements, assessment arrangements, and costs.
Does halal certification replace other import approvals?
Halal certification addresses halal requirements. Do not treat it as a replacement for other product registration, labeling, customs, or import requirements. Check the requirements relevant to your product and importer separately.
What is the difference between BPJPH and MUI?
BPJPH issues Indonesian halal certificates. Under the regular route, a halal inspection body assesses the product, and the responsible fatwa body determines its halal status before issuance. MUI’s Fatwa Commission has a role in that determination.BPJPH guidance ↗
What is foreign halal certificate registration, or RSHLN?
RSHLN registers an eligible foreign halal certificate with BPJPH. If the issuing body and product scope meet recognition requirements, this route can avoid a repeat certification application. The result is an Indonesian registration record for the foreign certificate.BPJPH guidance ↗
How do I check whether my halal certification body is recognized in Indonesia?
Check BPJPH’s current foreign halal body records and the scope of the recognition. A body’s name alone is not enough: the certificate must cover the relevant products. Send us your certificate and product list so we can help check the fit.BPJPH guidance ↗
Can halal and non-halal products use the same production line?
Shared facilities need careful review. Halal integrity includes preventing mixing and contamination, with separation requirements across relevant activities. Tell us about the equipment, storage, cleaning, and handling arrangements before assuming the current setup is suitable.BPJPH guidance ↗
Which products need halal certification in Indonesia?
The framework covers food and beverages, slaughter products, cosmetics, relevant chemicals, natural medicines, supplements, food materials, and specified consumer goods. Classification, animal-derived content where relevant, exemptions, and phase dates determine the requirement. Our visual halal guide explains the scope and latest schedule update.BPJPH guidance ↗
Do imported food and beverages need halal certification?
Imported food and beverages are within Indonesia’s halal assurance framework. Confirm whether your range needs certification or can use a recognized foreign certificate registration route. Products made from prohibited materials follow the applicable non-halal information requirements.BPJPH guidance ↗
Do cosmetics and skincare products need halal certification for Indonesia?
Cosmetics are included in Indonesia’s phased halal framework. Start with your ingredient list, manufacturer details, production process, and any existing halal certificate. Check our updated guide for the current timing. BPOM product registration and halal requirements should be planned separately.BPJPH guidance ↗
Do ingredients, additives, and processing aids need halal documents?
Food raw materials, additives, and processing aids are included in the halal requirements. For a finished product, keep supporting records for the materials used in production. A simple ingredient name may not explain its source or how it was processed.BPJPH guidance ↗
Does vegan or vegetarian mean a product is halal certified?
A vegan or vegetarian claim is not a halal certificate. Material sources, processing aids, production, and handling still need to be considered. Share any existing certifications alongside the full product and manufacturing information.
What information is needed for gelatin or other animal-derived ingredients?
Identify the animal source, supplier, manufacturing process, and supporting halal records for each relevant material. Include compound ingredients and processing aids. Bring any gaps to us early so the assessment requirements can be clarified.
Can a contract manufacturer or private-label brand apply?
Start by separating the brand owner, manufacturer, and applicant details. List the products, brands, factories, and existing certificates. We help establish what the proposed scope needs to cover and which party must provide each document.
What documents should we prepare?
Start with company information, a product list, ingredient details, manufacturing locations, and any existing halal certificates. Supporting material records and process information may also be needed. The exact checklist depends on your products and pathway.
Do we need every document before contacting you?
No. Start with your company, country or region, and product category. You can also tell us what certificates and documents you already have, and what information is still missing.
Do we need to send product samples?
Sample and testing requirements depend on the products, materials, and assessment. Confirm what is needed, how much is required, and where it should go before arranging a shipment.
Can our documents be in our local language?
Document language and translation requirements depend on the submission. Let us know which languages your records use so the appropriate requirements can be confirmed before translation work begins.
What is SIHALAL?
SIHALAL is BPJPH’s online service for halal applications, including registration of recognized foreign halal certificates. We help organize the information needed for the applicable submission.BPJPH guidance ↗
Do we need an Indonesian importer or local representative?

Why are HS codes needed for foreign certificate registration?
HS codes identify the goods being imported. Keep the codes consistent with the product list and importer’s records so the registration documents describe the same products. Confirm classifications with the party handling your customs requirements.BPJPH guidance ↗
Do we need a manufacturing process flow diagram?
Have a clear record of how each product is made, including material inputs, processing aids, outsourced steps, and packing. A process flow helps explain the manufacturing setup and identify where supporting documents may be needed.
What is SJPH, the Halal Product Assurance System?
SJPH is the system used to maintain halal integrity across materials, production, people, and procedures. It continues after certification. Your team needs records and working practices that keep certified products consistent with the approved scope.BPJPH guidance ↗
How long does certification take?
Timing depends on the applicable pathway, document readiness, product complexity, manufacturing sites, and assessment requirements. A useful estimate needs a defined scope. A service provider’s response time is separate from the certification timeline.
How much will it cost?
Costs depend on your product range, manufacturing sites, documents, and the work required. A quote should make service fees, third-party charges, and any exclusions clear. Share your business details to discuss the scope.
What can delay an application?
Incomplete ingredient records, inconsistent company or product information, missing supporting documents, and changes to the product range can create extra work. Preparing consistent information early helps reduce avoidable back-and-forth.
Can approval be guaranteed?
Approval depends on meeting the applicable requirements and the decisions of the responsible bodies. No service provider should promise an approval outcome before the required assessment.
How can we make the halal certification process faster?
Start with one consistent product list, complete ingredient and supplier records, and clear factory information. Share an existing halal certificate at the beginning: it may allow a simpler route. Resolve document gaps before assessment and keep a clear contact for follow-up questions.
What should a halal certification quote include?
Ask for the product and site scope, document support, assessment arrangements, and expected third-party charges. Clarify whether translations, laboratory work, travel, registration, taxes, and later changes are included or quoted separately.
What if ingredients or manufacturing change later?
Review changes before relying on the existing certification or registration scope. Changes to ingredients, suppliers, processes, or manufacturing locations may require updates or further assessment. Check the requirements with the relevant body.BPJPH guidance ↗
Can we add more products after certification?
An existing certificate or registration should be checked against the new product range. Keep a list of the proposed additions, ingredients, and manufacturing sites so the appropriate update or application route can be determined.
When can we use the Halal Indonesia logo on our packaging?
Use the label only once the relevant certification or registration requirements are met. Imported products using recognized foreign certificates have specific label and registration-number rules. Check the final artwork against the applicable requirements before printing.BPJPH guidance ↗
How can we verify a certificate or Indonesian registration number?
Use BPJPH’s official product search and match the company, products, and certificate or registration information. Check the scope and current status rather than relying only on a logo or a certificate image.BPJPH guidance ↗
Does an existing foreign halal certificate need to remain valid?
Keep track of the certificate’s validity and any changes to its product or site scope. Share expiry dates when planning Indonesian registration. Ask for the applicable update requirements before relying on an expired or replaced document.
What if we change our contract manufacturer after certification?
Treat a change of factory as a scope review. Send the new manufacturer’s details, product allocation, process information, and certificates before using the existing approval for the new production setup. Further assessment or an application update may be needed.
How do businesses in China or Hong Kong prepare for halal certification in Indonesia?
Start with the manufacturing location, product list, ingredient records, and any existing halal certificate. Identify whether the applicant, brand owner, and factory are different companies. These details help us plan the document and assessment work for your Indonesia application.
What should South Korean or Vietnamese exporters prepare?
Share your product category, factory details, ingredient specifications, and current certificates. Tell us whether you already sell in Indonesia. For Korean pharmaceutical exporters, BPJPH also identifies foreign certificate registration as a possible route where the requirements are met.BPJPH guidance ↗
How do exporters in France, Italy, and Switzerland start?
Send the products you plan to export, their manufacturing sites, and any current halal certificates. Include the issuing body and validity dates. We help review your starting point and organize the next steps for the appropriate Indonesian route.
Are products from the United States exempt from Indonesia’s halal requirements?
No blanket exemption applies. BPJPH states that U.S. products in categories subject to halal requirements must still comply. Mutual recognition can simplify the procedure; it does not remove the halal obligation.BPJPH guidance ↗
Can a U.S. halal certificate be used for Indonesia?
It may support the foreign certificate registration route if the issuing body and product scope meet BPJPH’s recognition requirements. Send us the full certificate and covered product list so we can help identify the next steps.BPJPH guidance ↗
Can I inquire if my country is not listed?
Yes. Choose Other in the inquiry form and enter your country or region. Include where the products are manufactured, their category, and any existing halal certification so we can review your request.
